EFA and the E-Merchants Trade Council
A new body, the E-Merchants Trade Council, Inc., has been set up in the USA to promote exports and imports generated by online sales. It has already started to lobby for the prolongation of the USA’s AGOA Act which sets down the products which may be imported into the USA tariff (custom’s duty) free. EFA has held a meeting with the EMTC and is considering affiliating. EMCT is also active in research.
The AGOA Act was passed under the Obama Presidency and must be renewed in 2023. Under the Trump Presidency, the emphasise moved from a broad continental agreement to Free Trade Agreement (FTAs) between the USA and individual countries. Kenya was the first to negotiate an FTA with the USA – this still awaits implementation which does not bode well for that type of agreement.
