Data Privacy in SA – how are we doing?

EFSA together with one of its member companies gave a presentation on the POPIA on 31 July (copy available on request). A 2019 Sophos study on the state of POPIA compliance in South African companies showed that only 34% of those surveyed felt their organisation would be ready to meet the POPIA requirements, and 77% believed their organisation would suffer reputational damage if fines for non-compliance were imposed. It should be noted that data processors still have a year until 1 July 2021 to install the necessary compliance processes and mechanisms and ensure they comply to the Act. For e-shops, EFSA stresses that the Safe.Shop trustmark process will ensure compliance.
