Space-X’s Starlink Project
In 2020 this Newsletter reported on the Starlink project by Elon Musk’s Space-X enterprise. At that time it was considered that SA would be active in the project, but it seems that this is no longer the case. SA is not among the 37 African countries where SpaceX’s Starlink aims to roll out in the next 2 years. Starlink’s promise of high-speed and low-latency connectivity could provide a big boost to Africa’s economic activity. The earliest African countries are expected to get Starlink now is in the second quarter of 2023. Starlink aims to roll out in 22 African countries during 2023. Three of SA’s neighbours are set to get the service this year — Eswatini, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. A further 15 countries are slated to get the service in 2024, including Botswana and Namibia. In our earlier report, we also questioned Starlink’s business model, which appeared to be very expensive. We do not know if this issue has been solved.
