Trade as a Weapon of Punishment
The USA has officially barred Ethiopia, Guinea, and Mali from benefitting from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). AGOA, which was initially agreed upon in 2000 and comes up for renewal in 2025, allows unilateral duty-free access for 6,500 products from Africa to the United States. The 3 countries were accused of human rights violations and/or military coups. There are concerns that if the US Democrats lose out in the mid-term elections next year, the Republicans may vote down the AGORA agreement.
