Aiming for a Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM)
A major barrier to trade and cultural relations between African countries has always been the challenges and costs of flying from one country to another. The African Union has tried for years to get the key players to cooperate. Recently aviation experts from the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) met to harmonize their work plans, strengthen institutional arrangement and collaboration in the operationalization and implementation of the SAATM.
This workshop follows the signing of 2 Grant Projects Agreements between AFCAC and the African Development Bank (AfDB) on Institutional Support for Implementation of the SAATM, and the European Union with COMESA as a lead Regional Economic Community (REC) on the Support to Air Transport Sector Development (SATSD) in the Eastern Africa, Southern Africa, and Indian Ocean Region (EA-SA-IO).
