WTO Postpones its End of Year Ministerial Conference

The 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) was due to start on 30 November and run until 3 December the General Council however agreed to postpone the Conference after the Swiss imposed new travel restrictions that would have prevented many ministers from reaching Geneva. The MC12 was due to discuss the moratorium on customs duties for electronic transfers of data – an issue that has caused controversy, with SA and India leading the movement to remove the moratorium (see our previous reports in this Newsletter).

Despite the postponement of MC12, the convenors of the JSI (the WTO committee dedicated to negotiating on ecommerce) have issued the following statement – “the co-convenors will arrange the JSI work programme to secure convergence on the majority of issues by the end of 2022. We will identify opportunities throughout 2022 for Ministers to provide guidance on key issues in the negotiations.”
