SMEs and the Digital Economy

A new report by the International Labour Office (ILO), the International Organisation of Employers (IOE), and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) entitled “Small goes digital how digitalization can bring about productive growth for micro and small enterprises, was launched on 28 June.

 

Prize for NGOs/organisations that empower small businesses and entrepreneurs through development work

The WTO-ITC and ICC  have combined to find the  digital champion for small businesses. Ideas will promote best practices in digital trade. Proposals on how to help micro, small and medium-sized enterprises address the difficulties they face with digital trade should be submitted by 15 September 2021 The winning proposals will be announced at the WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference held in Geneva from 30 November to 3 December 2021 (apply here – https://etradeforall.org/news/call-for-proposals-digital-champions-for-small-business/).

 

The first Asia Ecommerce Week will be held virtually from Sunday 17 to Thursday 21 October 2021

Organized by UNCTAD in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates, this edition will offer a unique space for a global and regional dialogue and targeted discussions under the theme “Shaping the digital economy for all”, with a specific focus on the Asia-Pacific region. COVID-19 impacts, trends, potential policy responses and recovery plans will also be discussed.

Proposals to organize a session during the week-long conference must be submitted online via this form by 10 August 2021. Next year the UNCTAD Ecommerce Week will be held in the Cameroon.

 

New Report Outlines The Rules on Importing into the EU and USA

The EU changed its rules on importing from developing countries on 1 July (see our report in past Newsletters), so understanding import conditions is more important than ever. Small businesses that sell products online enjoy the advantages of a global consumer base, but import conditions vary markedly in different markets. The new International Trade Centre (ITC) report,  E-commerce at the Border: Understanding customs and indirect taxes for United States and European Union markets  helps understand the European Union (EU) and the United States rules.

 

World Bank Report on the Impact of Data Flows and Transfers

The creation, use, misuse and control of data is the subject of intense debate today (see our article above on the DCDT’s Draft National Policy on Data and Cloud). The new World Bank analysis, the World Development Report 2021: Data for Better Lives (WDR 2021), looks at the decisions that need to be made in this complicated landscape and points out the importance  for developing countries, which are largely left out of global data discussions but where the right data policies could bring a lot of benefits.
