Greening South Africa

Among all the stories of doom and gloom, the SA Treasury has committed R488 million to the Green Outcomes Fund (GOF) to grow green small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in SA. The GOF is a partnership between National Treasury’s Jobs Fund and GreenCape, with knowledge partner the University of Cape Town’s GSB Bertha Centre for Social Innovation. Finance partners of the fund are Mergence Investment Managers, Edge Growth Ventures, Conservation International Ventures and Business Partners South Africa. GreenCape (a non-profit organisation that drives the widespread adoption of economically-viable green economy solutions from the Western Cape) says the world urgently needs to move towards models where economic growth is decoupled from natural resource use while supporting climate change mitigation pathways (ITWeb).
