New Rules for ZA. Domain names in the fight against COVID-19

New rules for South African ISPs and website owners have been published government gazette [PDF Link] on 26 March by Communications Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams as part of the government’s plan to fight the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This calls on all Internet sites operating the .zaDNA top-level domain name to have a landing page with a visible link to www.sacoronavirus.co.za. Therefore if you have a za.co website you should include the government link. In addition, the new regulations require ISPs to remove fake news on the virus, but, as MyBroadband points out, it will be difficult for ISPs to put this measure in place. The regulation also includes guidelines aimed at ensuring the smooth operations of telecoms networks and disseminating COVID-19 information to citizens and facilitating online education (virtual classrooms).

Meanwhile, Pick n Pay has launched an online scheduled grocery delivery service called Grocery Genius which allows customers to set up an automatic weekly or monthly delivery of those items they buy regularly. This will help plan your enforced stay at home for the next few weeks.

And LexisNexis South Africa has launched a project aimed at informing the general public of their rights during the lockdown. It will provide free access to resources and information covering a variety of general public themes. For more information click here.
