Book Clubs Make a Return

As someone who worked at a book club – Readers Digest – I’m always delighted to learn of book clubs in the digital age. Recently African book clubs have proliferated, providing a link for Africans across the globe and local communities during the isolation of the pandemic. The Happy Noisemaker is an online book club based in Nigeria run by Jola Ayeye. An offshoot of the blog she curates, Ayeye started the discussion group last November, using monthly Zoom meetings to provide a platform that celebrates literature by women or African writers. Another example is Inception Book Club (IBC) founded 4 years ago by Tumi Sebopa and based in Cape Town as a space for women to discuss everything from literature to career prospects.
